~~\\
\begin{enumerate}
\item \textbf{Types of data and other materials produced during the course
of the project.} \\
There are several main types of materials that the investigators will produce during the course of this project:
\begin{enumerate}
\item A public binary and source-code release of the Vizier data curation tool, including user and developer documentation;
\item A library of example curation notebooks and datasets;
\item minutes and proceedings of the proposed workshop;
\item scientific papers describing the tools and datasets generated;
\item educational materials, including lecture notes, problem sets, and demonstrations.
\end{enumerate}
\item \textbf{Standards to be used for data format and content.}\\
The standard format the dissemination of research results for the computer science community is to provide access to the research papers in a Portable Document Format (i.e., .pdf) in several online repositories such as the IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery (\url{http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore} and \url{http://dl.acm.org/}) digital libraries. It is also standard practice to post preprint copies on a personal webpage (depending on the copyright restrictions of peer-reviewed journals) and through open-access repositories such as \url{www.arXiv.org}. Source code is also stored on personal webpages or at public repositories such as \url{www.github.com}. The proposed budget includes an allocation for a demonstration deployment of the proposed system on a cloud-hosting platform such as Amazon EC2 (\url{http://aws.amazon.com}).
Where practical, example data will be stored in standard formats such as CSV and JSON. Example curation notebooks will be made available in a self-documenting format like JSON, YAML or Markdown. Documentation will be stored in plaintext, HTML, Markdown, and/or PDF.
Educational materials are stored in a variety of formats from PDF files of lecture notes and problem sets, to PowerPoint, HTML, or PDF slides will be posted on the personal webpages of the course instructors. Interactive course materials built on top of Vizier will be made publicly accessible through the demonstration deployment.
System implementations, log parsers, and other programs produced as part of this project will be in standard programming languages such as Scala, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, and/or C.
\item \textbf{Methods and policies for providing access and enabling sharing.} \\
All public data will be stored either in publicly accessible databases or websites hosted by one or more participating departments, or made accessible via the demonstration deployment of Vizier.
\item \textbf{Provisions for re-use, re-distribution, and the production of derivatives.} \\
We will use Creative Commons licenses \url{http://creativecommons.org/licenses/} for the re-use, re-distribution, and the production of derivatives of the project data, while respecting the limitations on copyrighted material from published journals. We will use Apache licenses \url{http://www.apache.org/licenses/} or similarly permissive licenses for the re-use, re-distribution, and the production of derivatives of all project source code, while respecting the licenses of any library dependencies.
\item \textbf{Methods for archiving and preserving access to data and materials.} \\
All data and materials will be stored on back up systems indefinitely.
The investigators will mainly rely upon the facilities of their respective participating departments to maintain web access to the course materials, sources codes, and papers.
\end{enumerate}

\section*{Undergraduate Research Assistant}
\$18,000 of funding is requested for 3 undergraduate research assistantship positions (\$6,000 each). These include one position at each of the three institutions: University at Buffalo, New York University, and Illinois Institute of Technology. The position at the University at Buffalo is intended for Lisa Lu, and positions at NYU and IIT will be for students to be recruited if the supplement is awarded. Lu has been part of the Mimir project for over 6 months and has already contributed to ongoing research that she will continue under this award. She and the two researchers to be named will assist in prototyping and evaluating components of Vizier and evaluating Vizier and its component parts on new test scenarios. All three researchers will be expected to lead group discussions on the results of their efforts and to document their findings through workshop, conference, and journal papers, blog posts, and other media as appropriate.
\section*{Travel}
We have budgeted funds for the three undergraduate researchers to attend one domestic conference each. As an example of a domestic conference, we use SIGMOD 2016 held in San Fransisco, CA. This conference had an average lodging cost of \$99 per night and a \$59 perdiem. The subtotal for 1 attendee over 5 nights was \$770. We expect roundtrip airfare of \$630 and average conference registration fees of \$600 per student. In total, we have requested a travel budget of \$6,000 (\$2,000 each).
\section*{Summary}
The total amount of this supplemental REU request is \$24,000.

{\large \sc Nature of the Prospective Student's Involvement}
\end{center}
\noindent We have identified three concrete projects for undergraduates. Where applicable, these have been developed in collaboration with the supported undergraduate researchers.
%The Vizier project aims to build an open-source, portable and scalable library for data cleaning and curation. Undergraduate researchers will be expected contribute to this project in two ways: (1) Apply Vizier to a prospective usage scenario in order to identify limitations of our existing infrastructure, and (2) Expand Vizier's capabilities to overcome one or more such limitations. In part in collaboration with the supported students, we have identified four concrete projects
\parsection{Project 1 (UB) --- Interfaces and Performance}
Based on a recent user study, we identified opportunities for improving the performance of probabilistic databases, and specifically Mimir. The study identified that users can make rational decisions based on uncertain data using far less information than a typical probabilistic database provides. This in turn makes it possible to compute sufficient information faster. The undergraduate researcher will assist in extending Mimir to take advantage of this observation and will evaluate it against other probabilistic database systems such as MayBMS.
\parsection{Project 2 (NYU) --- Vizier Modules}
The undergraduate researcher will aid in the design, implementation, and evaluation of primitives and infrastructure supporting supports cleaning tasks required by our collaborators at NYU's Center for Urban Science and Progress and the NYC Taxi \& Limousine Commission. The undergraduate researcher will be expected to produce clean, well-documented code as part of Vizier's open-source library of extensible cleaning operators, allowing members of the broad community to build on the undergraduate researcher's efforts in the future.
\parsection{Project 3 (IIT) --- Materialization}
In this project, we will study automated materialization of intermediate results for data curation workflows created with Vizier. The undergraduate researcher will aid in extending preliminary results for virtualizing versioning for such workflows and for replaying part of a workflow using our declarative replay technique called reenactment. The undergraduate researcher will specifically investigate optimization techniques for deciding what to materialize and when to materialize. The undergraduate researcher will be expected to implement and evaluate a proof of concept optimizer. Time permitting, the undergraduate researcher will also study how incremental view maintenance techniques can be leveraged to update a curation or analysis result to reflect changes to input data.

{\large \sc The PIs' Mentoring Experience}
\end{center}
\parsection{PI Kennedy}~~~
PI Kennedy has mentored seven undergraduates. The PI mentored Patrick Coonan and Thomas Mitchell as part of an REU for NSF Award \#1409551. The PI presently supports a diverse group of undergraduate research assistants including Lisa Lu, Jacob Varghese, and Hank Lin. Patrick Coonan?s work was published in a workshop. Lisa Lu?s work is presently under submission to a major database conference. The PI currently works with five undergraduate students (Lisa Lu, Jacob Varghese, Hank Lin, Grant Wrazen, and Lakshmi Prasanna Ethiraj) Besides mentoring undergraduate students, the PI has also mentored or co-advised 6 MS students, two of whom graduated with a Masters Thesis.
\parsection{PI Freire}~~~
Juliana Freire is a Professor of Computer Science and Data Science at New York University. Her recent research has focused on big-data analysis and visualization, large-scale information integration, provenance management, and computational reproducibility. Prof. Freire is an active member of the database and Web research communities, with over 150 technical papers, many open-source systems, and 12 U.S. patents. She has mentored over 50 students on research projects, including 8 undergraduate students. Prof. Freire is an ACM Fellow and a recipient of an NSF CAREER, two IBM Faculty awards, and a Google Faculty Research award. She has chaired or co-chaired several workshops and conferences, and participated as a program committee member in over 70 events. Her research grants are from the National Science Foundation, DARPA, Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, Sloan Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, W. M. Keck Foundation, Google, Amazon, the University of Utah, New York University, Microsoft Research, Yahoo! and IBM.
\parsection{PI Glavic}~~~
Boris Glavic is an Assistant Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology leading the database research group. His main research foci are provenance, query optimization, data integration and cleaning, and large-scale distributed database systems.
Boris is dedicated to involving students at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in his research.
During the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016 he did supervise research projects of a total of 18 Brazilian Undergraduate students as part of the BSMP exchange program.
In 2016, Amber Zhen, a first year undergraduate student in CS at Cornell University, did a summer internship with his group.
In addition, many undergraduate students have participated as volunteers in his research projects.
%Before coming to IIT, Boris did supervise 2 bachelor thesis and a "Undergraduate Student Research Awards Summer Project" sponsored by the canadian NSERC agency.
In addition to involving undergraduate students in research, Boris has supervised 28 semester-long individual research projects for master students and 10 master theses.
Boris was the program chair of the IPAW workshop in 2016 and is currently guest editor for a special issue on "Large-Scale Data Curation and Metadata Management" of the journal on "Distributed and Parallel Databases". He has served multiple times on the program committee for top conferences in databases including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, and EDBT as well as provenance workshops (TaPP). His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, Illinois Institute of Technology, and through gifts from the Oracle corporation.
\begin{center}
{\large \sc Mentoring that the Students Will Receive}
\end{center}
The undergraduate researchers participate in research group meetings at their respective institutions, and at joint group meetings between the three sites. Undergraduate researchers will interact with graduate students and the PIs on a weekly basis. In addition, the PIs meet separately with the undergraduates. Thus, the undergraduate students get to experience how a research group functions, but also get personalized mentoring. The PIs provide feedback on the students code as well as the documentation for the students are required to produce for their projects. The undergraduate students also have seats in the PIs? lab, allowing them to interact with graduate students daily. The PIs also have the students participate in writing research papers on which they are listed as co-authors.
\begin{center}
{\large \sc Process and Criteria for Selecting the Students}
\end{center}
The PIs have already identified one of the three students to be supported by this work: Lisa Lu an undergraduate at UB. She has been working with PI Kennedy for over six months, attended the Vizier Kickoff meeting, and has been actively involved in ongoing research related to Mimir. Lu is a domestic student and will assist with Project 1. PIs Freire and Glavic will each recruit one student at NYU and IIT respectively. Both PIs are active mentors for undergraduates and have in the past successfully recruited students for their work. They will reach out to students through undergraduate courses they teach, advertising through their respective departments, and through informal requests for mentoring from undergraduate students.
%
PI Glavic will recruit a student with sufficient background among the high performers from the population of undergraduates that have attended his database related courses in the last two semesters. Several students from these courses have already expressed interest in working on a research project related to Vizier and, thus, it can be expected that the recruitment will be successful. Students from underrepresented minorities will be given priority.

@article{LL18,
Abstract = {Explaining why an answer is (or is not) returned by a query is important for many applications including auditing, debugging data and queries, and answering hypothetical questions about data. In this work, we present the first practical approach for answering such questions for queries with negation (first-order queries). Specifically, we introduce a graph-based provenance model that, while syntactic in nature, supports reverse reasoning and is proven to encode a wide range of provenance models from the literature. The implementation of this model in our PUG (Provenance Unification through Graphs) system takes a provenance question and Datalog query as an input and generates a Datalog program that computes an explanation, i.e., the part of the provenance that is relevant to answer the question. Furthermore, we demonstrate how a desirable factorization of provenance can be achieved by rewriting an input query. We experimentally evaluate our approach demonstrating its efficiency.},
